Fishing in Prince Rupert

Prince Rupert and the surrounding areas are a fisherman’s paradise. The local lakes offer plenty of  fishing opportunities. Close to Prince Rupert is Prudhomme lake where you can find steel-head, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. Then there is Lakelse Lake outside of Terrace, BC where fishing opportunities abound for most lake fish. Another close by lake is Onion Lake near Kitimat, BC. Great fishing here for Rainbow and Cutthroat trout as well as Dolly Varden.

If your interest is in river fishing it is hard to get past the Skeena River where steel-head fishing is some of the best anywhere. All five species of salmon are found on the Skeena River during the salmon runs, particularly in July. Then there is the Kitimat River, Kalum River, Lakelse River and Copper River … all have spectacular fishing opportunities.

Ocean Fishing

Ocean fishing is probably one of the most sought after sports fishing in Prince Rupert. Whether you bring your own boat or are wanting a professional guide and boat who can take you to the best spots … Prince Rupert is where you want to base out from. There are numerous guides ready to take you out for a day or week of fishing.

Rick Conklin from Foggy Point Charters says the best time for the Spring (Chinook or King) salmon is late May to the end of June. Late June will also generally get you into the Coho and Pink runs, allowing for great catch prospects right through to late July.  The salt water fishing is simply excellent from May through to September with the busiest months being June through to mid-August.

Seafood Feast

If bottom fish is what you are looking for the there are Halibut, Ling Cod, and all kinds of Rock Fish abundantly available. Don’t forget to drop your crab net or prawn net for a delightful seafood feast. Remember the Department of Fisheries sets limits on all of the salt water fish so make sure you have the right fishing license and know your limits.

Most importantly the scenery is spectacular! A boat trip in the Prince Rupert area waters is a visual delight. And you never know when you are going to see an assortment of wildlife from bears, to eagles, to whales, sea lions and dolphins. All are abundant in the area. Enjoy your time in Prince Rupert BC!
